Mako Fuegos y Vinos Restaurant in El Calafate, Argentina

Passion and dedication can elevate a pursuit into an art form. Most often, masterpieces must be admired from a distance, however.

These artists, one would assume, are unavailable for a myriad of reasons. It would be very rare to meet a modern master, much less to have the opportunity to discuss their creations privately. So to hear master chef Matias convey his culinary concepts, in your native language—in a foreign country, is a rare treat indeed. To then indulge in his masterpieces firsthand, is a unique opportunity indeed.

We had the privilege to experience Mako Fuegos y Vinos on two occasions, and it will remain one of our fondest memories until our next visit. It’s unfortunate that we’re separated by a continent. Chef Matias, Lucas, Ana, and Emilce work seamlessly with the museum staff behind the scenes to produce an experience second to none. They enjoy being at the top of their game, and it shows in every detail.

Before the performance begins, warm bread and cheese twists measuring twenty-five centimeters are presented before a carefully curated Colome Malbec arrives for vetting. Anticipation rises as each of the six courses supersedes its predecessor in a perfect crescendo to the final act.

Before every other act, chef Matias conveys his culinary concepts. Each course is as delicious to the eyes as it is to the appetite. Under the watchful eyes of Lucas and Emilce, neither a wine nor a water glass is left empty.

Without further ado, we are honored to give the “New York, See You Later! Best Restaurant in El Calafate (and likely all of Argentina) 2018” award to Makos Fuegos y Vinos. The culinarily expertise and hospitality exhibited are exemplary. We hope to “see you later!”

Hi, we’re Dan and Emille. We met at church in NYC in 2010 and in 2011 we were married in Central Park on the bow bridge. In the last 6 years of marriage we stopped paying NYC rent, and bought a place on the edge of Hoboken, NJ, with spectacular views of the NYC skyline, which has been really fulfilling for photography enthusiasts. We have been talking about having kids for the last 6 years, but the New York lifestyle would make it difficult as our families are in Florida and Brazil. So we sold our place and furniture, left some great jobs, and friends and decided to have travel the world before we have kids. We’re cultured, but not fancy. We've been to 21 countries, and would love to visit all of them. We try to experience things like the locals as much as possible.
