Brazil’s Mirror Beach—“Praia dos Espelhos”

Upon entering Porto Seguro Nativos Tours we were greeted by Enoir, the amazingly courteous and professional general manager. Their prices and customer service are top notch, so we booked a trip without delay. The next day, a new Mercedes van arrived at our hotel at 8am, operated by very friendly and helpful tour guides who made the trip to the beach delightful. We were very glad that Fabricio, the driver, knew the way to the beach, as the two-hour drive would have been very difficult without a local.

Rose, the tour guide, told us all about Porto Seguro en route to the beach. Some of the memorable stats are that 90% of Porto Seguro’s churches are Christian, and they estimate that 100% of the city’s income is from tourism. A rousing game of bingo and a few group songs made the trip more enjoyable.

The half-way pit stop was much appreciated, especially as it happened to be at a great place to get homemade “cocadas,” a traditional Brazilian sweet made of coconut and several other flavors. They were cut into 2-inch squares, individually wrapped and were on sale for a mere R$ 2.5 (about $1), which is probably the best deal we’ve encountered.

Rumor has it that Mirror Beach is rated the second-best beach in Brazil—a lofty claim in Brazil—and upon completion of our trip, we can confirm that the rumors are true! The trip was well worth it. The palm tree lined beach is breathtaking and each hotel or “pousada” is more beautiful than the next. At Enseada do Espelho Pousada, we had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of Flavia Cury, Mario Rothschild and “Flor,” his 26 year companion. While Emille confirmed that they accept American Express, a rarity in Brazil, Dan spotted Flor fifteen feet above his head in a tree, and started photographing her. Mario then introduced himself, and called to Flor, who climbed down with her beak, and into his arms for an embrace, before resting on his shoulder. We have never seen anything quite like it from a parrot in the wild. We had a delicious lunch on the beach under the shade of Flor’s giant tree, and savored every bite. Our photos are surreal and the memories of this trip will last a lifetime.

One day was not enough. Five days here, we estimate, be enough to fully detoxify from a New York City-level workload. This would be a great place for a honeymoon, as it is supremely quiet, picturesque and peaceful. A local rode by with horses available for rides, providing a premier photo opportunity. In fact, anything here that catches your gaze is a photo op.

During our return trip, we stopped at Brazilian-Indian souvenirs shops, and captured a subway handle photo of some adorable natives. The perfect end to a perfect day.

Decorados a rigor ,retratando as belezas naturais e a cultura local.

Hi, we’re Dan and Emille. We met at church in NYC in 2010 and in 2011 we were married in Central Park on the bow bridge. In the last 6 years of marriage we stopped paying NYC rent, and bought a place on the edge of Hoboken, NJ, with spectacular views of the NYC skyline, which has been really fulfilling for photography enthusiasts. We have been talking about having kids for the last 6 years, but the New York lifestyle would make it difficult as our families are in Florida and Brazil. So we sold our place and furniture, left some great jobs, and friends and decided to have travel the world before we have kids. We’re cultured, but not fancy. We've been to 21 countries, and would love to visit all of them. We try to experience things like the locals as much as possible.
