Foz do Iguaçu, Argentina Side Essential Tips

Foz do Iguaçu is the South American Niagara Falls, and just like it’s younger brother in North America, it spans two countries. Both sides are incredible and worth visiting. We prepared a list of Emille’s (and Dan’s) Tips for making the most of your visit.

  • Bring over $2400 Argentine Pesos for the taxi and park if you are a couple.
  • Bring 500 Argentine pesos for Foz do Iguaçu admission (per person), as they don’t accept credit cards.
  • Get there as early as possible—the park opens at 9am.
  • If you’re staying in Brazil and visiting the Argentine side, we recommend calling Gabriela from Sou Local Hostel to arrange a discounted taxi. Every other taxi service is more expensive, and unfortunately Uber doesn’t go to the Argentine side. It’s 2018, but Uber is still new in this area. If you want to come by bus there will be two transfers, and the total cost would be around R$ 20.
  • Make sure you come with enough Brazilian Reais (R$) if you would like to visit the Brazilian side, as ATMs are scarce.
  • Take a break between 12—1pm, as the sun will likely be too harsh for good photos, and it will be crowded. There are good cafes with wifi, shade, coffee and food near the entrance. The food is a bit pricey (NYC pricey), so you could just enjoy a coffee and break out a pack lunch if you’re on a budget.
  • Bring water and snacks.
  • Mosquito repellent. Reapply as often as needed.
  • You might like pants or long sleeves if you are allergic to mosquitoes or bees.
  • Watch out for the Coatis—adorable raccoon-looking critters—as they will dig through your pack looking for food, if you place it on the ground.
  • You don’t need a rain coat. You could get slightly wet, but it’s also possible to keep your distance from the mist.
  • We prefered the “lower falls” to the “upper falls.”
  • See the “devils throat” early in the morning for better photos and to avoid the crowds.
  • Make the short “green path” walk to the train, and get a free train ticket before queueing up. Don’t worry about your seat on the train, as there are no photo opps en route.
  • Wear very comfortable shoes that can handle a little water.
  • Bring extra batteries for your camera.
  • Park staff will begin ushering you out at 5:30, and no, they’re not interested in waiting for you to take one last shot.

Hi, we’re Dan and Emille. We met at church in NYC in 2010 and in 2011 we were married in Central Park on the bow bridge. In the last 6 years of marriage we stopped paying NYC rent, and bought a place on the edge of Hoboken, NJ, with spectacular views of the NYC skyline, which has been really fulfilling for photography enthusiasts. We have been talking about having kids for the last 6 years, but the New York lifestyle would make it difficult as our families are in Florida and Brazil. So we sold our place and furniture, left some great jobs, and friends and decided to have travel the world before we have kids. We’re cultured, but not fancy. We've been to 21 countries, and would love to visit all of them. We try to experience things like the locals as much as possible.
