Great AirBnb Hosts in Rio de Janeiro

In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, there’s an up-and-coming neighborhood called Botafogo, featuring great restaurants, farmers’ markets and shopping. It’s only 10 minutes to Botafogo beach, 30 minutes to Praia Vermelho (“Red Beach”) and just over an hour to the world-famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches by foot. Their fourth floor flat overlooks a courtyard with giant coconut palms and avocado trees.

Our AirBnb host, Antonio—and his mother, “Gua”—welcomed us into their beautiful apartment for the last 33 years. Antonio, a Rio native, loves hosting travelers and introducing them to this incredible location. They opened their doors to Airbnb in 2011, and have hosted over 500 guests.

If you want a true “local” experience, look no further. Affordable, charming rooms called “modern & pop” and “fresh and pendant.” We stayed in “modern & pop” which has a clean, modern feel and a hammock. Yes, a hammock. There are three hooks mounted on the walls, and the hammock can hang from any two of them, offering options if someone wants to relax while the other moves about the room. Antonio loves bringing the outside in, and he has an array of hanging plants throughout the “fresh and pendant” room in which we stayed during the night it wasn’t booked.

We had countless conversations in Portuguese and English with this charming duo about Brazil, Rio and their history, as well as travel and jazz. They welcome you to use their kitchen, washing machine and “secado,” an ingenious ceiling-mounted drying rack—check out Emille’s video here!

AirBnb veterans of eight years, Antonio and Gua, offer hospitality and insight on how to best navigate and enjoy their vibrant city. We hope to “see you later!”

Hi, we’re Dan and Emille. We met at church in NYC in 2010 and in 2011 we were married in Central Park on the bow bridge. In the last 6 years of marriage we stopped paying NYC rent, and bought a place on the edge of Hoboken, NJ, with spectacular views of the NYC skyline, which has been really fulfilling for photography enthusiasts. We have been talking about having kids for the last 6 years, but the New York lifestyle would make it difficult as our families are in Florida and Brazil. So we sold our place and furniture, left some great jobs, and friends and decided to have travel the world before we have kids. We’re cultured, but not fancy. We've been to 21 countries, and would love to visit all of them. We try to experience things like the locals as much as possible.
