Balmaceda & Serrano Glaciers—Part 2

Aboard the ship once again, we witnessed the glacier and Monte Balmaceda—which is 2035 meters high. There are only a few known cases of its ascent. It’s in the same condition of retreat as virtually all the glaciers in the planet. Interesting note—in 1981, the foot of the glacier was at sea level.

After a delightful three hours of cruising, we dock at Puerto Toro where you can walk the last kilometer to the base of the Serrano Glacier. The beautiful walk leads you through the wonderful indigionus forest along the shore of the lakes Balmaceda and Serrano.

In the last 30 years the glacier has been receding 1 meter per year, compared to 1 centimeter in the preceding years. However, the increase is not attributed to global warming.

After completing a leisurely and fulfilling hike to Serrano Glacier in the Bernado O’Higgins National Park, we boarded the LM Roca, where we were treated to whiskey 🥃 on 1000-year-old rocks!

We had an amazing BBQ on the way back. Lamb (“cordero”), chicken, steak and potatoes were served on table top grills after soup starters and deliciously warm bread with spicy sauce. We met some welcoming, friendly Chileans, Victor, Laura and their family. Victor recently moved from Canada to Santiago, Chile, to start working on a marketing company. This is what we love about travel. We get to meet some amazing people who are very friendly and bring out the best in us.

We are finding out more and more that there are so many people out there who are kind and compassionate and see giving as a blessing. Weather it is our honorary Chilean abuela from the Puerto Natales AirBnb, or the guy next door who owns a restaurant and is ready to bless someone, because little do they know, it might come back to them pressed down, shaken together and running over. We believe that the same manner in which they gave, it will be given to them. We have seen God’s blessing firsthand and know that God taking care of us tremendously.

Hi, we’re Dan and Emille. We met at church in NYC in 2010 and in 2011 we were married in Central Park on the bow bridge. In the last 6 years of marriage we stopped paying NYC rent, and bought a place on the edge of Hoboken, NJ, with spectacular views of the NYC skyline, which has been really fulfilling for photography enthusiasts. We have been talking about having kids for the last 6 years, but the New York lifestyle would make it difficult as our families are in Florida and Brazil. So we sold our place and furniture, left some great jobs, and friends and decided to have travel the world before we have kids. We’re cultured, but not fancy. We've been to 21 countries, and would love to visit all of them. We try to experience things like the locals as much as possible.
