Our second dive stop with Barefoot Dive Center was the Felipe Xicotencatl Shipwreck. This was our first shipwreck dive, and is likely one of the best we’ll ever experience. This vessel was originally used as a mine sweeper for the US Navy from 1944—1962, and was then sold to the Mexican Navy. It was then renamed the Felipe Xicotencatl C-53. In 1999, it was decommissioned, donated to the Cozumel underwater park and sunk offshore from Chankanaab Park.

This amazing underwater attraction is 154 feet (56 meters) long, 33 feet (10 meters) wide and 40 feet (12 meters) high.

Time stood still as we swam around and through the vessel while observing it’s aged architecture, advanced coral formations and countless curious fish. A surprise visit by a barracuda made our hearts race and provided some exciting photo opportunities.

We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and highly recommend it. Opportunities like this one are the reason we wanted to become certified scuba divers. Diving in the crystal-clear waters of Cozumel is a must, and it’s obvious why so many people turn it into a habit.
